Donor influence concerns at SLU

SLU has not made a clear commitment to academic independence.  At SLU, current practice allows high-dollar donors to purchase roles and influence in academic matters.  In particular, in exchange for contributions, high-dollar donors are allowed to participate in search committees, hiring decisions, and in decisions about the funding (or not) of individual research projects.  Information about these practices and why they are problematic is available at the links below.

(While I only became aware of these practices in 2018, some claim that SLU has engaged in the granting of special academic privileges for high-dollar donors for years.  Some have also noted that there may be tax implications in such cases, and that those implications may be difficult to discern due to lack of transparency in the granting of privileges.)
